The West Coast Eagles secured their fourth win of the season on Sunday, a 24-point victory over GWS Giants at Henson Park.
The Eagles kicked 10 goals, posting their highest score of 64 points since entering the league, and senior coach Daisy Pearce credits the team’s growing maturity and connection.
“It’s huge, we’ve had three interstate games so far this year and have won all three,” Pearce said.
“It’s a sign of their growing maturity and their connection, they relish the opportunity to spend time together.
“But they keep front of mind that the biggest thing is to come and perform, so we see it as great opportunities to be on the road together.
“I think the big growth in this team is the ability to transfer the connectedness off-field to then seeing it in football acts that come through in the game.
“No matter whether the opposition has moment or whether we’re on top, so it was really good to see that consistently throughout the day again.”
New recruit Tess Lyons, signed as an injury replacement player on the eve of round one, produced an outstanding display on Sunday, convincingly winning the hitouts and also managing 10 disposals and six tackles.
“She was great, the Giants have a really athletic ruck in Eilish O’Dowd and we thought Tess would be a great matchup for her,” Pearce said.
“Tess’s power and speed and just her want to tackle and follow up is really good, and she did a really good job at the role we asked her to play.
“The beauty of Sarah Lakay giving us a target up forward, and her accepting that she just had a different role this week was really pleasing as well.
“And Lauren Wakfer, her ability to come into the ruck and ruck in our forward 50, I love the way all three of those girls just shared the role and played their part in it and got the job done.”
Eagles teenage talent Ella Roberts starred once again against GWS, finishing with 20 touches, three marks, nine tackles, four clearances and a career-high three goals.
“She’s been really good, her talent is undeniable,” Pearce said.
“We’re going to enjoy watching her play in the competition for a long time, the great thing has been her focus going into game and the consistency that she’s playing with now.
“To see her attack her opportunities around the ball but then to be able to impact forward, she’s a really important player for us.
“I think she set her game up with her tackle pressure, so early in the game, some of her defensive efforts to chase and be the one that was putting pressure on was really important, and then she got rewarded for it after that.”
West Coast will return to Mineral Resources Park for their week six clash with Port Adelaide on Saturday.
“There will be heaps that will come out of today that we can just keep improving,” Pearce said.
“Port Adelaide have been a really good team, and they play quite a contested style of footy as well.
“It will be another chance to keep practicing and building how we’re going around the ball, and we look forward to the challenge.”
