The West Coast Eagles have finalised their 2024 playing squad with the signing of Jayme Harken and Tess Lyon as injury replacement players for the upcoming AFLW season.
Back-to-back Dhara Kerr medallist Harken joins the nest fresh off a WAFLW premiership with the Claremont Tigers, winning the Lou Knitter Medal for best on ground in the victory over East Fremantle.
The 28-year-old midfielder averaged 25 disposals across 15 WAFLW games this year in another dominant season for the local superstar.
Harken was named in the 2024 WAFL state team, managing 14 disposals and six tackles in a narrow defeat to South Australia.
One of the most consistent mids in the WAFLW and an all-round threat, Harken has an elite endurance base, strong and clean hands, with the ability to break tackles and fend off her opposition to get the ball clear.
“It's a great story of perseverance. Jayme is a proven contested ball winner and has done everything possible to get the best out of herself,” AFLW List Manager Jordan Loxley said.
“We have no doubt Jayme will add some power around the stoppages and add another dimension to our midfield.
“After winning the last two Dhara Kerr medals, it's great to see Jayme get her opportunity.”
Subiaco Lions captain Lyons had an impressive 2024 WAFLW season in the ruck, averaging 20.5 hitouts and a career-high 10.3 touches from 10 games.
Standing at 184cm, Lyons’ follow-up work around the contest, her movement and agility makes her a standout amongst other talls.
Lyons demonstrates a high level of competitiveness and a willingness to learn and progress, and the 27-year-old adds on-field leadership and maturity to the developing Eagles side.
“Tess has had a different journey, playing at Uni footy club in the amateurs a couple of years ago, before heading to Subiaco,” Loxley said.
“Her improvement has been significant in the last 12 months, with her athleticism and aggression being two traits we value highly in the role she plays.
“We think she will add great depth to our ruck and key position stocks.
“While it's disappointing losing players for the season, it's good to see others get their opportunity at the highest level, and we believe that all of our replacement players will add great value to our list.”
