In a major blow for the West Coast Eagles, new AFLW recruit Annabel Johnson will require knee surgery after rupturing her ACL and tearing her meniscus.
The injury occurred during a training session last week and will see Johnson miss the 2024 AFLW season as she embarks on her road to recovery.
The Eagles recruited the emerging defender after reaching a three-way trade with Geelong and Brisbane in the 2023 trade period.
Johnson’s soccer background has proved beneficial in her football career, helping her ability to read the play, while her intercept marking has also been a key feature of her game.
Head of Women’s Football Michelle Cowan said Johnson has already had an incredible influence on the club, and the team will rally around her during this tough time.
“It’s heartbreaking for Annabel who has had such a huge impact on our program and players since she arrived from Geelong,” Cowan said.
“We’ll wrap our arms around her, and knowing her drive and determination, she will be back to have a big season in 2025.
“At just 23 years of age, Bel has so much football ahead of her and we look forward to seeing her back on the track with her teammates.”
