Where and when: Optus Stadium, Sunday, July 14, 2:40pm
TV: Live on 7 in WA, Fox Footy and streaming on Kayo
Last time we met: West Coast 5.5 (35) defeated by Brisbane 16.20 (116) at the Gabba, round 17, 2023.
Jack Gunston took charge for the Lions the last time these two teams met, finishing with six goals in Brisbane’s 81-point victory over West Coast at the Gabba. Key Eagles defenders Tom Barrass and Jeremy McGovern attempted to hold the fort, while Tim Kelly and Elijah Hewett provided some energy through the midfield. Brady Hough was also a positive, holding the dangerous Charlie Cameron goalless.
What it means for the Eagles: After Adam Simpson’s departure announcement during the week, this will be interim coach Jarrad Schofield’s first game at the helm and an emotion-charged matchday for the club. Following what has been a tough week, the team will be faced with the challenge of an in-form Brisbane outfit. The Eagles will want to put on a competitive display to farewell ‘Simmo’ in front of the blue and gold faithful.
The stat: West Coast has never hosted Brisbane at Optus Stadium, having played their last six games against them at the Gabba.
The match-up: Reuben Ginbey and Lachie Neale
Emerging midfield talent Reuben Ginbey will likely be tasked with the tough matchup of dual Brownlow Medallist Lachie Neale. Neale is a clean ball-winning midfielder with a mountain of skill and experience, and Ginbey will have to be on his A-game if he wants to keep the Lions star from having a significant impact on the game.
It’s a big week for: Liam Ryan
Liam ‘Flyin’ Ryan will play his 100th game for the club this weekend. Ryan, a 2018 premiership player in his debut season, is one of the most watchable players in the League, and has had an incredible impact on the team since his arrival. The All-Australian forward is coming back into form after a recent injury-plagued run, and a trademark flying grab will definitely be on the cards for his milestone game.
Big call: Co-captain Oscar Allen will kick six goals, just as former premiership star Josh Kennedy did the last time these two teams played in Perth, at Subiaco Oval in round 19, 2017.
Milestone: Liam Ryan - 100th AFL game
