The event, pioneered by West Coast Eagles physiotherapist Chris Perkin, attracted a 1,500 strong crowd who braved the heat to take part in the beach run and raise money for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome research.
More than $65,000 was raised for the cause, a result which Perkin is thrilled with.
Members of the West Coast Eagles squad attended the event in a show of support for Perkin, who started the event in memory of his unborn baby and wife Cindy who passed away in 2009.
Perkin says that after experiencing the heartbreaking loss of his baby and wife, he wanted to show support for people who are experiencing similar situations.
“The Sunshine Beach Run is a way for people to show their support for anyone who has suffered the loss of a child and raise awareness and funds for ongoing research into preventing stillbirths and sudden and unexplained deaths of children,” he said.
West Coast ruckman Dean Cox said the cause has particularly hit home with him since recently becoming a father.
“It’s a great initiative that Chris has developed here,” he said.
“Myself and the boys have come down to support him, and also to meet the participants. We’ve been signing autographs and having photos with them as they’ve come across the finish line.
“It definitely resonates a bit more this year since I’ve become a dad. The thought of losing your child is something no parent would ever want to even think about, so I’m eager to help in any way I can and rapt that the event has received the support it has.”
