It was another unfortunate outing for the WAFL Eagles on Saturday, falling to South Fremantle Bulldogs by 53 points at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.
It was blustery conditions throughout the game with a strong sea breeze swirling, and senior coach Kyal Horsely said the Bulldogs played the conditions better on the day.
“While the result was disappointing, there was a lot to take out of the game,” Horsley said.
“It was our first game where there was strong breeze that favoured one end, and to South Fremantle’s credit, they played the conditions really well.
“They were disciplined with their ball use while playing into the breeze, which made it hard for us to score in general play.”
Top Performers
Harley Sparks
Strong return off illness for Harley, he gave us strong drive out of the back line and defended well all game.
Zane Trew
Strong performance inside, gave us a lot of drive out of stoppage and around the ground, I’m looking forward to seeing Zane build off this performance.
Callum Jamieson
Solid performance from Callum, his ability to win or half all the contests he was in stopped multiple South Fremantle forward advances, he also showed real leadership with his communication and willingness to help others all game.
AFL Listed Players
Andrew Gaff
Solid game, hard playing on the wing with a strong breeze blowing to the scoreboard side.
Archer Reid
Tough day for the talls with the conditions but it was exciting to see Archer take some strong contested marks in trying conditions.
Luke Edwards
Great to see Luke back, he started really well and faded out of the game which is to be expected coming off a month out but looking forward to seeing his growth this week.
Harvey Johnston
New position for Harvey down back and he performed well, with his understanding of team defence, he gave us some good drive out of the backline.
Clay Hall
More of an inside game for Clay this week, he played with a real physicality which resulted in seven clearances and six tackles for the team.
Harry Barnett
Tough day for the talls with the conditions, to Harry’s credit he kept trying different ways he could impact the game and it was good to see him take some strong contested marks and convert his chance in front of goals.
Jack Williams
Tough day in front of the ball with how South Fremantle defended, Jack worked hard for us and continued to create a contest all game despite being outnumbered on most occasions.
Harry Edwards
Strong performance from Harry, stood up under a lot of supply and had some big ‘save the day’ plays throughout the game.
Loch Rawlinson
Strong defensive game from Loch – he applied five tackles with the majority being inside 50 which are so valuable for the team, he deserved more looks at goals with how hard he was working for the team.
Jordyn Baker
Strong game from Jordyn, he defended well and then looked to help others when he could, he was rewarded with three intercept marks which was the most for our team.
Coen Livingstone
Tough day for the talls with the conditions, Coen played with his customary aggression for the contest and kept working hard all day.
Tyrell Dewar
It was a ‘nearly’ day for Tyrell, his work rate and speed was notable all game and by doing this he created a lot for us, and if the conditions were more favourable, he would have got the reward for all his work.
Coby Burgiel
Tough day for Coby on the wing, he got caught on the dead side for a lot of the game with the conditions, he did show some class with ball in hand from limited opportunities.
