1. How tough is Jeremy McGovern? He has shown it many times throughout his career and again demonstrated it after copping a heavy hit from Port star Zak Butters on the stroke of quarter-time. McGovern rested on his knees and sucked in some deep breaths for a few minutes as he recovered his composure. He then took his place in the Eagles defence for the start of the second quarter and remained a strong contributor throughout.

2. We knew the two clubs were at different ends of the spectrum and it was highlighted through Port Adelaide’s efficiency, save for goal front inaccuracy. The Eagles are looking to be better in the contest and the contested possession differential was just 105-110. It was similar in clearances (31-35). Eight of those touches came in an adrenaline-charged opening quarter when he excelled. He had five clearances and four inside 50 entries as part of that performance.

4. Former Hawthorn forward Tyler Brockman also played his first game for the club and while he was not as noticeable it was tough going in the Eagles’ forward 50. Port led the inside 50 count 57-40 but they also advanced with better execution. Brockman had some good moments including teaming with Reid to create the Eagles first goal. Other youngsters also contributed with Reuben Ginbey having 12 possessions and 17 pressure acts while Campbell Chesser had eight possessions and a goal after being subbed into the game in the third term.

5. The dash of Jayden Hunt out of defence was demonstrative of the Eagles wanting to take the game on. Often he cut through the Port structure to send the ball out of the danger zone as he had 20 possessions and gained a team high 610 metres through those touches. Midfield bull Elliot Yeo also worked hard and set a great example for his young teammates with 20 disposals, nine of which were contested.
