On the back of an outstanding 2023 season, West Coast Eagles Club Champion Charlie Thomas has been selected in the AFLW All-Australian team.
With three seasons under her belt, this is Thomas’ first All-Australian nod, and she becomes the first Eagle to be selected into the final 21-player team.
Thomas enjoyed a break-out campaign in 2023, the exciting young defender finishing in the top-five in the League for rebound 50s this season, with her pace, determination and footy smarts halting the opposition in front of goal on multiple occasions.
The 20-year-old showed skill and maturity beyond her years, confirming her place as a reliable pillar of the Eagles’ backline.
Thomas was third in the League for disposals by a defender, averaging 17.4 per game, additionally tallying 4.2 marks, 307 metres gained, five rebound 50s and 2.2 intercept marks per game.
Finishing with 42 marks in total for the year, Thomas’ stats rivalled some of the most experienced and talented defenders in the competition.
Displaying further versatility in her game, Thomas was moved forward for a period in round nine, having an immediate impact and kicking the first goal of her AFLW career.
The WA local said it was an honour to be named in the All-Australian side.
“It’s very surreal, I’m honoured to be named in the team,” Thomas said.
“I worked pretty hard in the off-season with the coaches, so it’s great to see some reward for effort.
“I’m just really keen to get back into it again next year and hopefully have some more team success.”
The 2023 All-Australian Panel consists of Nicole Livingstone (Chair), Andrew Dillon, Laura Kane, Jason Bennett, Kelli Underwood, Sarah Black, Katie Loynes, Narelle Smith and Megan Waters.
