Where and when: Fremantle Oval, Sunday, September 3, 3:05pm

TV: Live on 7Mate, Fox Footy, Kayo and the AFL Live Official app.

Last time we met: West Coast 3.5 (23) def. by Fremantle 3.8 (26) at Optus Stadium, round five, 2022.

It was heartbreak for the Eagles the last time these two teams met, with West Coast falling by just three points in what was an epic cross-town rival contest at Optus Stadium. Despite the result, it was a positive day out for the young Eagles squad, edging within one point with five minutes remaining in the game, but just falling short at the final siren. Bella Lewis starred through the midfield, finishing with 25 disposals and six marks, while captain Emma Swanson also impressed with 20 disposals and five marks.

What it means for the Eagles: This matchup with Fremantle will be a great indication for the young Eagles squad to see how well their pre-season work has paid off. West Coast levelled up their training in the lead up to the season, both on the track and in the gym. They’re feeling fitter and stronger than ever and are extremely motivated to have a successful season. With the AFLW RAC Derby rivalry adding an extra spark to the round one contest, the Eagles will want to start the season strongly and record their first defeat over the Dockers.

The stat: The Eagles have faced Fremantle five times since entering the competition, unable to record a win against them so far.

Oppo in focus: Fremantle’s captain Hayley Miller will be one to keep an eye out for on Sunday. Miller is an elite midfielder, and a tough and determined competitor and the Eagles will be looking to limit her involvement around the contest.

It’s a big week for: Eagles debutants

West Coast will have a trio of debutants this weekend, with Amy Franklin, Lauren Wakfer and Emily Elkington all set to pull on the blue and gold. Franklin will be fronting up against her former side and will look to have an impact in her new colours, while Wakfer will make her long-awaited debut after having spent last season on the sidelines with an ACL injury. Elkington will be ready to make the most of her opportunities, the teenager itching to run out with her teammates after missing out on game time last season due to school commitments.

Big call: Having never beaten Fremantle in a contest to date, the Eagles will get the job done and win their first AFLW RAC Derby.
