A competitive first half for West Coast 13.4 (82) was overshadowed by a second-half surge from Subiaco 22.19 (151) at Leederville Oval on Sunday afternoon.
It was sunny conditions for the round 18 matchup against the top-four placed Subiaco, with an undermanned yet determined Eagles putting on an encouraging display to stay in the contest for majority of the day.
Eagles midfielder Isiah Winder (28 disposals) was impressive around the ball, and Zane Trew (25 disposals and two goals) shone for West Coast on his return from a groin complaint.
Rhett Bazzo (22 disposals and 11 marks) was critical in the Eagle’s backline while Harry Barnett (10 disposals 13 hitouts) had a tough task against Subi’s Zac Clarke.
Next Gen talents Tyrell Dewar (20 disposals and one goal) and Jordyn Baker (19 disposals) found plenty of the footy, and Greg Clark (19 disposals) did well in the first half, with managed minutes in the second half after coming on as the Eagles sub in last night’s RAC Derby.
Shannon Lucassen (six goals) starred in the Eagle’s forward line, kicking five of his goals in the first half, while Ben Sokol (five goals) put on a strong display at the other end for the Lions.
Eagles were efficient in their forward 50 throughout the day, but an uncharacteristically wasteful Subiaco flexed their muscles in the fourth quarter and blew out the margin to 69 points at the final siren.
It was an important win for the Lions, who now jump into second place on the WAFL ladder.
