Days on from Saturday’s tough loss to Sydney at the SCG, Adam Simpson is ready to put that game behind the team and focus on Sunday’s clash against St Kilda at Optus Stadium.

The West Coast coach conducted a searching review of the club-record 171-point defeat on Monday, before the players and coaching staff hit the training track to start turning things around.

“We had a heavy day yesterday so, it was a bit of soul searching and reflection, the way we reviewed the game was pretty brutal,” Simpson said on Tuesday.

“That was done yesterday, today’s a new day and we move on and try and train our way into some form.

“The journey we’re on is a big one, we didn’t want a game like that, or the game we had against Adelaide.

“It’s about how resilient you can be and what you can do to get out of it, it’s not a quick fix.”

High-flying Liam Ryan looks set to remain on the sidelines indefinitely, due to the seriousness of a hamstring injury he sustained in the RAC derby in round three.

“I don’t know (if he will play again this season), I haven’t got a full report on that yet but it’s looking more unlikely with the severity of that hamstring,” Simpson said.

“It was always going to take a long period of time, so once again, probably not looking past this week with what we’re trying to do, who we’ve got available this week is where I’m at.”

After suffering a head knock in Saturday’s game against Sydney, reigning John Worsfold medallist Tom Barrass looks clear to play St Kilda this weekend.

“I think he’ll be available; he did three (concussion tests) and he passed them all so he’s all good,” Simpson said.

West Coast veteran Shannon Hurn is a possibility to return this weekend, Simpson stating that Hurn’s game time will be closely managed for the rest of the season.

“I’ve made the mistake of declaring players a bit too early but at this stage he will train today and may put his hand up,” he said.

“He won’t be playing every game for the rest of the year, we need to manage him as best we can.”

Jaimie Cripps is edging closer to making his return from an ankle injury, but Simpson suggests lowering expectations on players returning from long stints on the sidelines.

“He’s had a really good training block, so once again, he will be another player that if he comes back in, he’s missed 13 weeks, so just taper your expectations on these guys who have missed multiple weeks,” Simpson said.

“Some of these guys didn’t even play last year, I think that’s sort of showing a little bit on some of our guys.

“The names are coming back, but the synergy is not there obviously, so part of our goal in the short term is to get as connected as we can with the younger guys and the senior guys and be more competitive.”
