The West Coast Eagles and BHP are proud to announce a partnership extension for a further three years. The partnership between the world-leading resources company and the four-time premiers began in 2005 and has created significant social outcomes for communities around Western Australia.
The partnership has been the backbone of the club’s continued regional expansion with a presence in communities throughout WA to assist in delivering programs in collaboration with local organisations.
The partnership renewal will continue to focus on youth engagement in the Pilbara and Goldfields regions. Over the past two years, the club has achieved 28,042 total project engagements in these regions with the support of BHP. The depth of that reach was possible through the increase in youth engagement coordinators from Port Hedland to Newman and the Goldfields. The impact of these programs has helped promote positive behaviours and wellbeing in culturally safe environments.
The partnership will also aim to increase female engagement with BHP extending its commitment to female football from grassroots level through to the elite AFLW program in which BHP is a major partner. The Eagles and BHP have delivered programs which have seen significant increase in female participation in football and driving improvements to coaching, high performance and skill development as well as lifting awareness of mental health and other educational objectives.
“The West Coast Eagles are proud to stand alongside BHP in making a difference to the lives of the next generation of West Australians,” General Manager of Community and Game Development Richard O’Connell said.
“The longevity of this relationship has been due to shared values and the aspiration of improving the lives of as many young people as possible.
“We are incredibly proud of the work that BHP and the West Coast Eagles are doing together to strengthen communities and inspire others to join the challenge.”
BHP’s Head of Corporate Affairs Western Australia, Meath Hammond, said the renewed partnership was testament to the success of the longstanding relationship.
“For nearly two decades, we’ve been proud to partner with the Eagles, working together to improve female and Indigenous participation, youth engagement, and mental health outcomes in our regional and remote communities,” Meath said.
“It has been fantastic to see the programs we support inspire and empower so many young West Australians over the years, and we look forward to seeing more great players of the future coming from the Pilbara and Goldfields regions.”
