Review, refocus and move forward.

That has been the mantra for West Coast this week following a step backwards against Carlton, in a performance that wasn’t typical of the Eagles’ competitive effort against the odds over the past month.

“It was a rough weekend but as we sit here it’s Wednesday and we’ve moved on quite quickly from that,” defender and leadership group member Liam Duggan said of the triple-figure defeat to the Blues.

“We reviewed the game Monday and we’ve already started to look at Richmond, but it was a disappointing weekend.

“The boys are obviously going to feel a 100-point loss but we think there’s been some good signs from the first part of the year.

“We took a step backwards on the weekend but there’s still some good energy and enthusiasm about what we can do this year.”

The Eagles have been restricted in how much they can train with limited numbers on the track, but those who are available will have the chance to improve and bounce back at AFL level with few reinforcements to call upon.

“They’re staying fit and fresh and we’re getting our fundamentals right because we feel that our skill, our contest around the footy is a big part of what’s made us play some good footy for 85 per cent of games,” Duggan said.

“But when it drops away teams have been able to get a run on, so we’re going to have a focus on that going forward.”

Prolific midfielder Dom Sheed is set to return to the side for his first game since the RAC Derby in round three after recovering from a knock to the throat, but Samo Petrevski-Seton (suspension/quad) and Rhett Bazzo (concussion protocols) are not available.

Richmond, which has also only won one match and drawn another game, are also facing availability challenges with 10 players sidelined.

“Richmond probably aren’t where they want to be either but one thing we have recognised with Richmond is they have been in every game they’ve played in, so they haven’t been too far off,” Duggan said.

“It’s a big challenge for us to go over. We’ll have a fairly unchanged line-up.

“Like I mentioned, the injuries aren’t helping at the moment, that’s the situation we find ourselves in. Chasing those little wins is what we’ve been after for the last 18 months.

“We still think we can win games of footy coming into them, so that’s what we’re chasing, but it’s got to be four quarters to get a win in this competition at the moment.”

Duggan, part of the West Coast Eagles RAP committee, also backed the club’s decision to support the First Nations Voice to Parliament ahead of a referendum later this year.

“Really proud of the club to take that position and come out to support to vote yes for the referendum and Voice to Parliament,” Duggan said.

“It’s not ‘you must vote yes’ (to members and fans) but it’s a great platform for us to stand strong and get behind it. We encourage people to do their own research and make an informed decision.

“I’m behind it and the club is behind it, so really proud with the decision to come forward with it.”
