Another of the West Coast Eagles’ emerging youngsters, Elijah Hewett, is on the brink of an AFL debut.
He is not yet a confirmed starter but has been named on the extended interchange bench ahead of Sunday’s first home game of the season against GWS.
Hewett, drafted with the club’s second selection (#13) last November would join fellow youngsters Noah Long, Campbell Chesser and Reuben Ginbey, who had their first taste of senior football last week, should he make the cut tomorrow.
Ginbey, Long and Chesser have all retained their places in the team.
A strong bodied midfielder/forward, Hewett has been listed in a 26-man squad with utility player Jake Waterman, forward Samo Petrevski-Seton and wingman Greg Clark. The only omission at this stage is Jack Petruccelle, who was the sub in the five-point loss to North Melbourne.
Petruccelle was injected into the game in the third quarter to replace ruckman Callum Jamieson but had little effect on the game. He will benefit from a full hit out against East Perth in a WAFL practice game on Saturday.
Hewett has been building his game time over the last month to the point where he can now be considered. He has been named on the extended interchange bench with Waterman, defender Jayden Hunt, Petrevski-Seton, midfielder Xavier O’Neill, forward Jamaine Jones, Clark and Jamieson.
The match committee will trim that name to four players on the bench and four emergencies with the substitute player being one of the four emergencies whose identity will be revealed on match day.
