Champion AFLW captain Emma Swanson and rising star Ella Roberts will remain West Coast Eagles until at least the end of 2024 after signing contract extensions.
Swanson, the reigning back-to-back Club Champion, has led the team with distinction since the Eagles entered the competition, moulding the youthful playing group in her ultra-professional and committed image.
The 28-year-old has added a year to her existing deal and is excited to witness the potential of an emerging squad come to fruition in the seasons ahead.
“I couldn't be more proud of this footy club, the work done throughout the last 12 months to build our professionalism and support off the field, it's a credit to the staff," Swanson said.
"But I'm also so proud of the girls embracing the challenges and embracing being challenged. I love playing with this group, they are young and energetic and just want to work hard.
"I know where we are going, it's super clear and I just want to be part of it."
Roberts lived up to the hype as WA’s top draft selection in her debut campaign, playing all 10 games and earning the club’s Best First-Year Player Award while also finishing fourth in the Rising Star.
In a major vote of confidence in the team’s direction, the 18-year-old forward has extended her rookie deal by a year.
“I’ve agreed to extend because I’m absolutely loving my time at the Eagles and I couldn’t imagine me being anywhere else,” Roberts said.
“I think we’ve got a really young, exciting team and we’re on the uphill trend. I’m really excited to see how we go in the next couple of years and I really want to be part of it.
“I loved my first season. Towards the end of the year is probably when I started to feel more comfortable and deserving to play at the high level.
“I think this year I’ll be in good hands because I learnt from last year and I’m ready for this year.”
AFLW List Manager Jordan Loxley was thrilled to secure two of the Eagles’ most important players for a further season each.
“It’s a wonderful outcome for the club to extend Emma until the end of 2024. Emma has built her game through hard work and determination who sets excellent standards of this young playing list," Loxley said.
"We are excited to see Emma lead this group into the future.
“To play all 10 games and finish fifth in our Club Champion Award in her first year illustrates how highly we value Ella.
“We are extremely excited to see where Ella can take her footy in the next couple of years.”
West Coast's Head of Women's Football Michelle Cowan has seen Swanson's development first-hand during a long affiliation, and can foresee a bright future in the game for Roberts.
"Emma's on field performance and off-field leadership has gone to new heights and our playing group and club are better for this," Cowan said.
"Having coached Emma when she was 16 years old and to see her growth over the past 10 years as a person and footballer has been incredible to be a part of.
"Ella’s drive to earn the respect of her team mates was a clear priority for her and she delivered on this in her first year. She is a brilliant team person on and off the field.
"We are looking forward to her continued growth and development and know she can have a big impact in our club and this competition for a long time."
