The West Coast Eagles joined in the fun for their first ‘Have a Go Day’ at Burswood Park yesterday, enjoying the day with around 15,000 seniors all keen to keep active through sport and recreation.
The event, now in its 21st year, is run by the Senior Recreation Council of WA (SRCWA) and encourages the community (aged 45 or over) to get involved, stay connected and try new activities to keep mentally and physically healthy.
With last year’s community event attracting 14,000 people to the Town of Victoria Park, the club jumped at the opportunity to be involved and soon had its hands full, with the club’s staff kept busy with seniors keen to try out their kicking and handballing skills, as well as answering questions about our new program for the clubs’ seniors.
Club legends Dean Cox, Ross Glendinning and Phil Narkle came down to draw the lucky winners of our free raffle competition and some fantastic Eagles prizes were given away every hour with the major prize being a 2014 team signed guernsey. Seniors had to ‘have a go’ at one of our football related activities to be in with a chance to win.
The day was run as part of Seniors Week and was the perfect way to remind people of the value of sport and recreation in their lives. Other activities available to try included kayaking, rock-climbing, archery, dancing, medical checks plus much, much more. Even Rick the Rock got involved, having a go at the rock-climbing wall!
As well as Have a Go Day, the SRCWA, a volunteer-based organisation, organises a range of programs for the state’s seniors including the Aged Care Games, Exergaming and Activity Days.
