Excited and honoured were the key phrases coming from West Coast forward Imahra Cameron as the club celebrates Indigenous Round at home in a round three clash against Essendon.
The dazzling forward recognised the importance of this year’s Indigenous Round theme, stating she still pinches herself knowing she has the opportunity to inspire others.
“The theme for this year is about celebrating the journey of those past, present and emerging and the resilience that they’ve shown to get where they are,” Cameron said.
“For me it’s a pretty special round being Indigenous myself and to be able to continue to celebrate our culture, to embrace it and educate people around our culture and what it means.
“Acknowledging and honouring those who come before us is really important and really special.”
The Eagles will be donning their Indigenous Guernsey for the next two weeks as the competition celebrates Indigenous culture.
“Our guernsey was designed by Buffie Corunna and within the design it’s pretty special to represent the club itself and its connection to the community,” Cameron explained.
“The design talks about how club and community can work together with continuous communication and respect that we have for that connection.”
Playing at Mineral Resources Park this Sunday holds a distinct significance for the Perth local playing on Whadjuk/Noongar land.
“It’s pretty special to play on the country that I’m from, obviously being from the Perth metro area playing here is always pretty important for me,” Cameron said.
“It’s also about playing at this club and the connection I have here so I’m very excited for it.”
Despite the added pressure of performing in such a special round, Cameron was more focussed on how to get better individually and the impact she can make to improve her side.
“I know there is always that expectation to perform that bit better during this round, however it’s just another round when it comes to the game,” she said
“We want to focus on the way we want to play this week.”
Cameron will put her hand up for selection this week after playing her first match of season seven last Sunday against Gold Coast.
“Obviously last week was quite disappointing but we know we are better than that,” Cameron said.
“We went away from the standard that we want to play so we are hoping to put that aside and focus on this weekend.”
Head Coach Michael Prior has been pleased with his side's progress in training and is hoping that a few key players will return including Belinda Smith and Aimee Schmidt.
"Belinda has pulled up surprisingly well," Prior said.
"She trained okay today so signs are looking good for her and we hope she gets up and plays this week.
"Aimee has also done all the protocols coming off her concussion, she's ticked all the boxes so she'll train tomorrow and get through that session to be good to go."
Also sitting on a 1-1 record, Prior is under no illusions that the Bombers will bring another set of challenges despite travelling on the road for the first time this year.
"I think they have done really well with their recruiting." Prior said.
"They've got some key midfielders that we've got to take care of, Bonnie Toogood is a class act up forward.
"We need to be on our game and get back to the way we want to play."
