For so long a model of consistency and durability, Gaff was restricted by injuries that compromised his output in season 2022.

After a brilliant start to the year with 32 disposals in round one against Gold Coast, the hard-running Eagle missed five of the next eight games.

It was a far cry from his first 11 seasons when Gaff barely missed a match, allowing him to reach the 250-game milestone in rapid time in round 20 this year.

The 30-year-old’s season also ended early due to his sore ankle, limiting the 2015 Club Champion to just 16 appearances – his fewest in any campaign.

During the middle stages of the year the two-time All-Australian played some of his best football, with 30 disposals and a goal against Adelaide in round 12 before the bye, followed by 27 touches against Geelong upon the team’s return to action.

For the first time since his debut campaign in 2011, the left-footed wingman missed the top-10 in the John Worsfold Medal count by one vote, but few would back against Gaff returning to his prolific best after getting his body right this off-season.

Standout performance: Hitting the ground running

Missing regular starting centre square trio Tim Kelly, Luke Shuey and Elliot Yeo, the Eagles needed experienced duo Andrew Gaff and Jack Redden to stand up in round one, which they did with best afield efforts in a fighting loss to the Suns.

Gaff ran himself into the ground in 89 per cent game time, picking up 32 disposals, 12 contested possessions and winning five clearances.

The left-footed star also sent the ball inside 50 four times and had as many score involvements, leaving nothing in the tank in search of a season-opening triumph.

Unfortunately, he missed the following week due to an ankle problem in a familiar tale for the Eagles’ difficult year.
