Despite their round one win to Port Adelaide last weekend West Coast Eagles captain Emma Swanson made it clear while the win was encouraging the side are still on task and have quickly shifted their focus to Gold Coast for round two.

West Coast had an impressive fourth quarter win against Port Adelaide on Saturday, kicking four straight goals to ultimately get up by 12 points.

As the final siren sounded however the post-match celebrations were short as the team shifted focus to the Suns.

“Keeping expectations high is crucial,” Swanson told westcoasteagles.com.au “Standards have been high all pre-season and the team isn’t going to drop those after one win.

“We have a bigger encounter in Gold Coast ahead of us and we are on the road so that always brings its challenges.

“As a side we are making sure that we prepare well and keep hammering in on the extras we’ve been doing all pre-season.”

Head coach Michael Prior noted the extra pre-season effort was a factor in round one’s win at Mineral Resources Park, now it’s up to Swanson and her team to keep that mindset moving forward.

“We had a good afternoon on the weekend,” Swanson said.

“It was definitely worth celebrating, however we want to make it an expectation that we are doing this week in and week out.

“However this side isn’t about just focussing on one game, we take our wins when they come but then we are back on the job.

“We need prepared as we can be for the Suns, we have momentum right now and we need to take advantage of that.”

The Eagles returned to training on Monday night and were upbeat ahead of the entire squad travelling to Gold Coast together this weekend.

“The side is looking good right now,” Swanson said.

“Spirits are high and we are on task, I think if we take it game by game and keep focussing on achieving all the little things we may surprise some people.

“However it’s about getting the preparation right and making sure we look at it game by game.

“Right now we are focussing on how to get the best out of this team as a collective and how we can use that this Sunday.”

West Coast will face the Suns on Sunday September 4 at Metricon Stadium with bounce down happening at 3:10pm AWST.
