Peter Wilson thought he had a free kick.

That is why he decided to snap the ball over his head in the 1992 Grand Final.

It was a snap decision. Assuming that he had been tripped, Wilson believed he would get a relatively easy shot in front of goal but after the whistle didn't blow, the ball miraculously sailed through for one of the most incredible goals in grand final history.

In hindsight, Wilson thinks coach Mick Malthouse would have gone ballistic if it didn't turn out to be a goal.

The major was famously called by broadcast legend Dennis Cometti - "Like a cork in the ocean over his head, oh my word, what a goal."

The goal was followed by Peter Matera's long range effort which put the Eagles in front and on their way to a historic first premiership.
