The West Coast Eagles Million Meal Challenge is back in 2022.
This year, Mineral Resources has very generously pledged 1,000 meals for every mark, up to 100,000 meals, during the West Coast versus St Kilda match at Optus Stadium on Sunday, July 24.
For 10 years, the West Coast Eagles and their fans have supported the vital work that Foodbank WA does in the community.
"When we answered the call for help in 2013 we could never have imagined how much worse the problem of food stress would become,” Eagles star and Foodbank WA ambassador Andrew Gaff said.
“One million meals will take thousands of struggling West Australians out of the food queues, lift the daily stress of finding their next meal and give them a shot at getting back on their feet.
“We urgently need your donation to help thousands of hungry West Aussies put food on the table.”
The Million Meal Challenge has been a valuable representation of community giving within WA, and we know that together we can provide a million meals to Western Australians going without.
More people are reaching out for help than ever before. The cost of groceries is rising, the cost of fuel is rising, the cost of rent is rising and now mortgage holders are facing more impending rate hikes.
This is pushing many Western Australians into financial stress and they are struggling to put food on the table.
Many people on a pension, or working for minimum wage, struggle with rising living costs, and 66 per cent of people working for minimum wage have less than $14 a day to live on once they’ve paid their essential bills. That is the cost of a sandwich and coffee.
There are also 94,000 children living in poverty in Western Australia.
Before the pandemic, Foodbank WA was assisting about 200 people each day at its branches and mobiles.
It is not unusual for more than 600 people a day to seek assistance now. As the queues get longer, Foodbank WA urgently needs your help more than ever.
