THE SELWOOD brothers have provided inspiration from afar to new West Coast recruit Koby Stevens and the highly-rated junior is now looking forward to working in close quarters with Eagles teammates Adam and Scott.

Stevens, a gutsy inside midfielder from TAC Cup side Gippsland Power, arrived in Perth yesterday after West Coast recruited him with pick No.23 in last Thursday's NAB AFL Draft.

The 18-year-old said the whirlwind draft experience had been "unreal" and he was now looking forward to teaming up with two of the four Selwood brothers playing in the AFL.

"I've always idolised the Selwood brothers and to be over here with two of them is pretty cool," he said from Subiaco Oval on Monday.

"The way they go about their footy, I think they're really professional and they're hard at it. I saw them out there training today and they were just going for it".

Stevens is considered one of the sliders of the 2009 draft pool after slipping into the second round.

In an accomplished 2009 season, the Gippsland co-captain was awarded most professional player at his TAC Cup club, represented Vic Country in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships and captained the AFL-AIS Academy team.

But regardless of where he fell in last Thursday's draft, Stevens said he was happy to be given a chance at the elite level.

"Coming straight over from Victoria yesterday was a big experience, but to get here [and] meet all the boys is great," he said.

"All I wanted to do as a young kid was play AFL footy and to do it in WA, I'm loving it. I would have liked to have stayed in Victoria, but I just want to play footy, so to come over here is unreal."

West Coast's top draft pick, Brad Sheppard, has already declared his intention to push for senior selection early next season and the 187cm, 83kg Stevens said he was also capable of stepping into the side next year.

"If I get my body in the best possible condition I can, I think I can [play AFL footy next year]," he said.

"I met Brad Sheppard a little bit last year and I'm staying with him this week, so that's great. To have a young person like him alongside to help me out - and a mate as well - is good."

The childhood Richmond supporter said he received a mixed reaction to Thursday's draft news from his family.

"Mum was pretty emotional, but they were all very proud and excited at the same time," he said.
