The West Coast Eagles are set to welcome back skipper Luke Shuey and Andrew Gaff for Sunday’s trip to face Greater Western Sydney, and there is light at the end of the tunnel for Dom Sheed as he nears a WAFL return.
Shuey just needs to get through training this week to play after a minor hamstring kept him out of the past two losses to Brisbane and Melbourne, with Gaff sidelined by a quad complaint last round.
After badly damaging his ankle in a practice match, Sheed is almost ready to play game minutes in another boost to an undermanned midfield also missing Elliot Yeo, who emerged from Health and Safety Protocols on Tuesday and is building back towards playing.
“Luke has gone through his rehab protocols for his hamstring and done a good sign-off session on the weekend. He’s just got to train this week to be available against GWS,” Head of Health Mark Finucane told westcoasteagles.com.au.
“Andrew will be a test this week. He’s progressed really well after a little grab in his quad last week, which was on the very minor end. He’s just got to train later in the week to show his fitness for the weekend.
“Dom has progressed really well since his ankle surgery and we’re looking in the next couple of weeks of building some minutes through the WAFL.”
Veteran duo Josh Kennedy (knee) and Shannon Hurn (calf) have been ruled out of the flight to Sydney, while Liam Ryan (hamstring) and Luke Foley (concussion protocols) will also miss after going down against the Demons.
“Unfortunately, Liam strained his hamstring late in the game against Melbourne. He’s settling nicely but will go into the hamstring rehabilitation program,” Finucane said.
“Hopefully he’ll start his walk-jog tomorrow and build into the week.”
Meanwhile, small forwards Willie Rioli and Jack Petruccelle are three-to-four weeks away from returning from their hamstring strains,
“Jack is progressing well with his hamstring but we want to see some strength gains in the gym before we let him run fast, as we know that he can,” Finucane said.
“Willie we’re just taking a graduated build with his hamstring strain. He’s joining in some lower-speed drills on the track, but building his strength in the gym and controlled high-speed running.
“We’ll get a base of that before we see him join full training then hopefully playing in three-to-four weeks.”
