Where and when: Mineral Resources Park (Whadjuk), Sunday, February 26, 2:10pm (AWST)
TV: FOX Footy, 7 Mate, Kayo and the AFLW website
Last time we met: Brisbane 10.5 (65) def. West Coast 2.8 (20) at Hickey Park, round three, 2021.
The West Coast Eagles started strong against Brisbane in 2021, coming into the first break five points up. They were still in the contest at the half-time siren but Brisbane showed their experience in the final two terms, outclassing West Coast and finishing the match with a 45-point victory. Irish midfielder Aisling McCarthy stood tall across the match with 18 disposals and a goal, though unfortunately will not be playing in the round eight clash due to a fractured finger. Andrea Gilmore also slotted West Coast’s only other goal for the day, while Mikayla Bowen (11 disposals, four marks) was also influential.
What it means for the Eagles: West Coast will be looking for their first victory of the season at Mineral Resources Park and must outrun the reigning premiers to do so. A win on the board would also be the club’s first against one of the inaugural teams in the competition, with Brisbane entering the AFLW in 2017 as opposed to West Coast’s entry in 2020. A victory would also instil some confidence in the playing group as they head into the final two matches of the year, including a clash with the Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in round nine, and a game against North Melbourne in Victoria for round 10.
The stat: West Coast will have to put together a four-quarter performance to topple the reigning premiers on Sunday. Last year the side came into the half-time break just one point down, but were unable to hold onto the lead in the final two stanzas. After half-time Brisbane booted a notable seven majors, while West Coast were held goalless.
The match-up: Evie Gooch v Dakota Davidson
Fremantle recruit Gooch has steadied the ship in West Coast’s backline this year and has played her role well as a deep defender. As an on-field leader, Gooch has been tasked with keeping the backline in order and has the experience needed to do so after playing four seasons in the AFLW competition. It’s expected she will spend time on premiership player Davidson who was named in the 2021 AFLPA 22 under 22 team for her commanding season as a key forward. Gooch is currently one of West Coast’s top intercept possession winners, averaging five per game and will be tasked with picking off supply to one of Brisbane’s most tenacious forwards.
It's a big week for: Aimee Schmidt
As West Coast’s current top performing forward, Schmidt has the ability to break open games with impressive snaps under pressure. After booting three goals last weekend from 12 possessions and finishing the day with five score involvements, Schmidt’s experience will be vital as she’s used as a key target in the forward line.
Big call: Mikayla Bowen stands up and kicks two against the reigning premiers.
