Sheppard shines on track
West Coast draftee Brad Sheppard is making a big impression in his first AFL pre-season
Sheppard, who was drafted by West Coast with pick No.7 at the 2009 NAB AFL Draft, has made a seamless transition into the Eagles' pre-season program.
The 18-year-old spent much of Wednesday's session at Claremont Oval doing centre square drills with assistant coach Scott Burns' midfield group and ran through the middle opposed to Bradd Dalziell during match simulation.
Teammate Matt Rosa said the East Fremantle recruit had impressed in his first days at the club.
"He trained really well this morning. He looks very clean and he's got a good head on his shoulders," Rosa said.
"We're all looking forward to seeing what those young guys can do."
In a gruelling session that went for more than two hours, Sheppard also shone in the group's running drills alongside noted distance runners Tim Houlihan and Dalziell.
Rosa, another of the Eagles' big-engine midfielders, was rested from the more intense running drills after having ankle and hip surgery in the off-season.
However, he said he was aiming to take part in full training from next week.
"I'm travelling okay; I'm a lot further advanced than this time last year," Rosa said from Perth's Princess Margaret Hospital, where he is an ambassador.
"I didn't train until the start of February this year, so it's good to be able to get involved in the ball work and really aim to improve my skills and my overall game.
"I'm probably [training at] about three quarters."
Andrew Embley (ankle) and Matt Priddis (knee) also appeared to have lifted their training loads on Wednesday morning, although their running was still being managed.
Rosa said the team was enjoying having star ruckman Cox back on the track while Kerr, who is recovering from a groin ailment, was not far off taking part in full training.
"He's pretty close now, Kerry, he's coming back from his injury troubles," Rosa said.
"When he hasn't been able to get out on the track he's had a great input during meetings. So he's doing everything he can just to help the younger boys get better."
Second-year midfielder Luke Shuey, who is recovering from minor hernia surgery, had a light session on Wednesday, while defender Eric Mackenzie continues to be nursed through his recovery from shoulder surgery.
The footballs were out from the get-go, but rookie-listed youngster Adam Cockie and second-year midfielder Ash Smith spent large chunks of the session putting kilometres into their legs.
In front of goals, Quinten Lynch, Mark LeCras, Tony Notte, Ben McKinley, Dean Cox and Callum Wilson went through a long series of goalkicking drills.
In the afternoon, Rosa was joined by teammates Kerr, Cox, Josh Kennedy, Brad Ebert, Mark Nicoski and Ash Hansen at Princess Margaret Hospital where the group handed out presents, signed autographs and played games with patients.
