    Match preview: Giants v Eagles

Check out who it’s a big week for, what happened last time and the key match-up ahead of Sunday’s clash with GWS

Where and when: Engie Stadium, Sunday, April 6, 2:10pm (11:10am WST)

TV: Live on 7 and 7plus in WA, nationally on Fox Footy and Kayo (see broadcast guide here)

Last time we met: West Coast 5.13 (43) defeated by Greater Western Sydney 16.12 (108) at Optus Stadium, round three, 2024.

It was a tough day at the office for the Eagles, falling to the Giants by 65 points at Optus Stadium. West Coast competed throughout the day but were outclassed by the visitors. There were some bright sparks from youngsters such as Reuben Ginbey and Harley Reid, along with Brady Hough who was matched up with Giants’ gun Toby Greene. The Eagles took the game up to GWS in the first term with midfield trio Elliot Yeo, Reid and Tim Kelly setting the tone, but skill execution going forward was an ongoing issue.

    07:26

What it means for the Eagles: West Coast will be looking to show their competitive side when they face the Giants this round, and secure the four points for the first time this season. There have been plenty of positive signs form the developing Eagles in the first three rounds, but senior coach Andrew McQualters’ new game plan is still yet to completely take off. With four changes to the team this week, including three debutants, we can expect to see an injection of energy around the ground that will hopefully help to lift the group.

The stat: 25 per cent of West Coast’s goals have come from beyond 50 metres out – the highest percent of any team.

The match-up: Brady Hough and Toby Greene

Eyes will be on the Brady Hough and Toby Greene matchup for this game, both players elite at their crafts. While Hough has played just 56 games compared to Greene’s 242, the 22-year-old Eagle has taken a number of impressive scalps in his budding career, and continues to develop from week to week. Three-time All Australian Greene has been a damaging pillar of the GWS forward line since arriving at the club, and Hough will be doing what he can to keep him quiet.

    02:34

It’s a big week for: Debutants

There will be three fresh faces in the blue and gold on Sunday, with Tom Gross, Sandy Brock and Hamish Davis all making their debut against the Giants. The trio have been impressive throughout the summer and have delivered standout performances for the WAFL Eagles in the past month. Brock will take his place in the back line in the absence of Jeremy McGovern, Gross will add some speed and versatility through the middle, while Davis will utilise his power and endurance on the wing.

Big call: Tom Gross will finish with 20-plus touches and a goal in his first game at AFL level.

Milestones: Tim Kelly (100 WCE games), Tom Gross (debut), Sandy Brock (debut) Hamish Davis (debut)

Match report: Slick Giants outclass Eagles

It was a tough day for West Coast against the flag fancies at Engie Stadium

An undermanned West Coast has suffered an 81-point loss to Greater Western Sydney as Jesse Hogan bagged an equal career-high nine goals in a ruthless performance at Engie Stadium.

The Giants took barely two minutes to boot the first goal from Darcy Jones then blew the game open with four majors in five minutes early in the second term on the way to a 20.12 (132) to 7.9 (51) victory on Sunday afternoon.

The Eagles offered some resistance in the third stanza, which they lost by a point after Hogan kicked truly after the siren, but couldn't stop the landslide in the final quarter.

Debutant Sandy Brock tried hard to quell Hogan and had some impressive moments, but the silver service entries into the Giants' forward 50 were impossible to stop.

Harley Reid started in defence and had some stints on ball, finishing with 25 disposals in his best game of the season to date, while namesake Archer Reid competed strongly in attack and first-gamer Tom Gross kicked a superb running goal.

    08:08

Liam Baker (24) battled hard even as the Giants midfield remained in command while co-captain Oscar Allen did his best to shut down intercept-marking machine Sam Taylor in a defensive forward role.

With the four points all but in the bag by the main break, the Giants forwards were soon lining up to hit the scoreboard with Hogan at the front of the queue.

The Giants spearhead was largely unstoppable in attack as he booted nine goals from as many kicks, only blotting his stats when later chasing a 10th major from a set shot that fell short when outside the 50m arc.

Hogan could have added another earlier in the final term when unselfishly dishing off a handball to set up Aaron Cadman for a major from the goalsquare.

While Hogan helped to ensure the Giants recorded their greatest winning margin over the Eagles, the goal rush was sparked from the early exchanges by the ever-dynamic Jones.

The Giants forward broke the lines and stretched the Eagles with his blistering pace and finished with two goals and 24 disposals in another eye-catching display.

Midfielder Tom Green also booted two goals and gathered a game-high 37 disposals, while Giants captain Toby Greene finished with three majors though will be sweating on a review of a collision with Eagles forward Matt Owies.

Lachie Whitfield (35 disposals) and Lachie Ash (31) set up the 'Orange Tsunami' from defence, while Harry Himmelberg (25) was just as critical to keep the Eagles forwards out of the game.

The Eagles remain winless heading into Gather Round against Carlton, who are also yet to claim victory after four matches this season.
