    Match preview: Eagles v Hawks

Check out who it is a big week for, what Sunday's contest means for the Eagles and the key match-up

Where and when: Optus Stadium, Sunday, June 30, 2:40pm

TV: Live on 7 in WA, Fox Footy and streaming on Kayo

Last time we met: West Coast 4.2 (26) defeated by Hawthorn 22.10 (142) at York Park, round 10, 2023.

The last time these two teams met, it was a horrible day out for the Eagles, falling to the Hawks by 116 points in Tasmania. Hawthorn dominated from the outset, establishing their authority with a seven-goal opening term, and never took their foot off the accelerator. On a day with very few Eagles’ highlights, Jack Petruccelle, Brady Hough and Noah Long showed some pleasing aspects, and Tim Kelly and Dom Sheed worked hard in the middle with Bailey Williams.

    04:40

What it means for the Eagles: It was a spirited showing from West Coast last week against Essendon, the boys giving it a red hot crack before unfortunately falling short by 30 points at Marvel Stadium. The Eagles put together some strong efforts in the first and third term to keep them in the game but couldn’t get a handle on the margin. If West Coast can get off to a hot start out of the gate, and not have to play catch up throughout the match, they will be in a position to give the Hawks a run for their money and put on a competitive showing on their home turf chasing a first win at Optus since round 10 against Melbourne.

The stat: This will be just the third clash between these teams at Optus, with one win apiece. West Coast got up by 32 points in round 12, 2020 after the Hawks wreaked havoc on the Eagles' top-four bid in the final round of 2019 with a 38-point upset.

The match-up: Harley Reid v Will Day

West Coast welcome back elite midfielder Tim Kelly and superstar teen Harley Reid to take on the Hawks this weekend. Harley will likely be matched up with Hawthorn’s young talent and reigning best and fairest Will Day, which will be an exciting battle between two up and coming midfielders in the league.

    14:20

It’s a big week for: Tim Kelly

Kelly has spent the past three matches either side of the bye on the sidelines with a hip issue and a sore knee. The reigning Club Champion will be a huge inclusion in the Eagles’ engine room and will add some pace and experience around the contest.

Big call: Oscar Allen could have had a bag (2.4) on his return last round and we're backing him to bring his kicking boots to nail five majors second up.

Match report: Eagles outplayed by high-flying Hawks

West Coast was beaten in every facet by the red-hot Hawks at Optus Stadium on Sunday

An in-form Hawthorn has dismantled West Coast in clinical style at Optus Stadium to win a one-sided clash by 61 points on Sunday.

The Hawks, who never looked troubled after kicking the opening three goals, now boast the equal longest current winning streak alongside Carlton after five straight wins, and gained valuable percentage from the 14.10 (94) to 4.9 (33) win.

The Hawks stared down an Eagles midfield that was boosted by the returns of Tim Kelly and Harley Reid to dominate the clearance battle 38-19 and hardly gave West Coast a look out of centre bounces (14-4).

The Eagles relied on key defenders Jeremy McGovern (20 disposals, one goal) and Tom Barrass (14, nine marks) to keep the margin under control throughout the first three quarters, but could not stop an onslaught of five unanswered goals to start the final term that put the game to bed.

The defensive pair racked up a combined 10 intercept possessions in the first quarter and prevented an early blow-out, but it was clear from the opening 10 minutes that the Hawks were in control.

Co-captain Liam Duggan tried hard all day to finish with a team-high 28 disposals, but West Coast had far too few contributors on a tough day, which returned just four individual goalkickers.

For Hawthorn, James Worpel (28 disposals and 11 clearances) and Jai Newcombe (33 and eight inside 50s) were outstanding alongside Conor Nash (25 and six clearances) in an even team performance that included 10 separate goalkickers.

It was a disappointing performance from West Coast, which had a strong team on paper but hardly got its game going given its clearance strength was stripped away by a hungrier, more desperate Hawthorn team.

The visitors played the game in their front half with 17 inside 50s to eight in the first quarter, but a glut of wasted opportunities kept the margin to 17 points at quarter-time when it could have been much more.

Beaten 4-0 in centre clearances early, Adam Simpson threw Liam Ryan into the first bounce of the second quarter and got an immediate result, allowing Jamaine Jones to crumb inside 50 and get the home team rolling.

It was temporary, however, as Worpel and Newcombe asserted themselves in the middle soon enough. Indeed, Ryan's centre clearance would be the only one for West Coast in a scrappy first half marred by more missed chances.

Mabior Chol provided a highlight when he flew over Josh Rotham for a terrific pack mark, but the resulting set shot was sent wide.

Nick Watson, whose goalkicking has been an issue this season with 5.15 ahead of Sunday, stood up to slot a late opportunity from 45m, keeping Hawthorn’s buffer at a handy 17 points.

The second half was a procession at times as the Hawks used their bounce out of the back half to create scoring opportunities, kicking 4.4 to 1.0 in the third term as the Eagles struggled to defend on transition.

By the final term, any hope of a fightback in the style of their last home game against North Melbourne was dashed when Chol converted in the opening minutes to extend the margin to 45 points.

The energy and excitement that West Coast had started to generate at home has been absent recently, with a fourth-quarter fightback against North Melbourne the exception in a poor three-game block at Optus Stadium.

The Eagles will have the opportunity to rebound in their only MCG visit for the season against Melbourne next round.
