One of the best and most courageous medium-sized defenders of his era, Sheppard called time on his career in December 2021 due to the ongoing effects of some heavy head knocks. A popular and energetic player who relished playing on some of the most dangerous small forwards - including Toby Greene, Robbie Gray and Michael Walters - the East Fremantle product more than delivered on the faith shown when West Coast drafted him via pick No.7 in 2009. Sheppard departed the club a life member, 2020 All-Australian and Chris Mainwaring medallist as best clubman in 2020, and was desperately unlucky not to be part of the 2018 premiership team after tearing his hamstring in the qualifying final against Collingwood.
