On Sunday afternoon, the West Coast Eagles and Sydney Swans not only battled for premiership points at Domain Stadium, but they were also playing for the HMAS Sydney II Trophy.
The annual match is held in memory of the 645 men who died when the HMAS Sydney II was sunk in 1941 and takes place annually between West Coast and Sydney - representing the ship’s home port of Sydney, and the state of her final resting place, WA.
With a win over the Swans for the first time since 2007, it was the first time the Eagles could claim the HMAS Sydney II Trophy, a tradition which began in 2010.
Volunteers from Legacy, a charity which provides assistance to Australian families who have lost loved ones serving time in the defence force, were at the ground collecting donations before the game and throughout the functions rooms across the day, and the fans at Domain Stadium responded terrifically.
This year the total raised was $11,395, with every cent going to the Legacy foundation.
The Legacy foundation provides services to Australian families suffering financially and socially after the incapacitation or death of a loved one, during or after their defence force service. Legacy currently cares for around 100,000 widows and 1,900 children and disabled dependants throughout Australia.
The West Coast Eagles would like to thank everyone who donated to this wonderful cause.
