For the second time this pre-season, the West Coast Eagles have hosted three AIS-AFL Academy players at the footy club.
East Fremantle’s Jordan Snadden, Callum Ah Chee from South Fremantle and the Swan Districts’ own Yestin Eades have all been given the opportunity to train with the Eagles during their first week back on the track following the break.
The three youngsters have been thrown into the thick of the action, taking part in full training drills and player education meetings, along with touch and weights sessions.
As part of their program, 35 members of the level two squad will next head to America at the end of this month for a 10-day high-performance training camp.
Ruck coach Dean Cox believes that the week-long stint at an AFL club is an excellent way to bridge the gap between the talent pool at the academy and the AFL system.
“I suppose before they head away on their AIS camp to America, they get an opportunity to spend a week with us and first of all go through what an elite organisation does to prepare for training,” Cox said.
“They get involved in all the training, as soon as they got here on Monday, we obviously had a really tough session in 44-degree heat, but they joined in every training drill and get feedback not only from players but coaches throughout that training session and give them an insight into the way an AFL clubs operates.
“Hopefully some if not all of them are here at the end of the year if we can draft them.”
The club was intent on making the experience as authentic as possible for the youngsters, providing a change of living quarters to make them feel like part of the team.
“They’re staying with three players, so Matty Rosa, Jeremy McGovern and Patrick McGinnity are looking after them,” Cox said.
“They come out of their shells as the week develops, but they’re just all about trying to learn as much as they can and sponge as much information as they possibly can.”
