West Coast’s prized first pick Liam Duggan says he can’t wait to make the move over to Western Australia.
The Victorian from the Western Jets was selected at no.11 and said he was relieved when his name was finally called out.
“I’d heard a few rumours that West Coast were interested,” Duggan said from the Gold Coast Convention Centre.
“I sort of had my fingers crossed that they would call my name out to get the day over and done with because the nerves were really starting to kick in.
“I’m really happy that West Coast chose me.”
The 17-year-old has had a consistent season in the midfield, winning the 2014 Ben Mitchell Medal as the leading player of this year's AFL National Academy.
The left-footer boasts excellent decision making skills and is looking forward to developing as a future midfielder at the West Coast Eagles.
“In 2013 I was more of a defender and then obviously this year I moved into the midfield and loved my footy there, so I think that’s where I want to develop into a midfielder for sure,” Duggan said.
“I think I have a really consistent season and I played my role wherever I was.
“My worst games were never bad, so I was sort of always in a healthy range so I thought my performances over the year were good.”
Relocating to the other side of the country before you are eligible to vote would be a daunting prospect for any young footballer, but the Ballarat product says the famous Perth sunshine will be a welcome change.
“I can’t wait to get over there,” Duggan said.
“It’s sort of a big thing, having to move from Victoria over to WA.
“I’m going to get better weather so that’s a good start and I can’t wait to get over there and live the lifestyle.
“First thing’s first, I’ll just get in there and earn the respect of my teammates and meet everyone and build relationships with them.
“Then obviously next year, there’s always the goal to play AFL footy and that’ll be my goal, just to get a game.”
West Coast stuck with a Victorian theme at this year's draft, also recruiting Dandenong's Tom Lamb, Geelong's Jackson Nelsonand Calder's Damien Cavka.
With its final selection, the club welcomed father-son pick Alec Waterman to the nest.
